Castor Oil (glycerol tri-ricinoleate) can be alcoholyzed at the carboxyl position and esterified at the hydroxyl group. The alkyl esters, particularly those in which the hydroxyl has been replaced by an acetoxy group are plasticizers for many natural and synthetic resins and elastomers, including polyvinyl chloride, nitrocellulose, ethylcellulose and rubber polymers.

The plasticizing effect of ricinoleate or hydroxystearate plasticizers is generally characterized by: (1) Excellent softening and flexibilizing. In vinyl they improve "hand" or "drape." (2) good low temperature plasticizing, specifically recommended for rubber and plastics where they compare favorably to adipic and sebacic acid plasticizers. (3) Excellent lubricants. The lubricating effect is advantageous for vinyl calandering and extrusions, mold release for elastomers and plastics, and in strippable coatings. (4) Excellent pigment wetting. They are highly recommended for the production of pigment dispersions, or for incorporation in elastomeric or plastic compositions containing pigments or fillers. (5) Good electrical properties. Low dissipation factor, and high volume resistivity and dielectric constant.

Saturation of the double bond in ricinoleate esters yields hydroxy and acetoxystearates which have improved stability to oxidation and resistance to ultraviolet light. Acetyl ricinoleates and acetoxystearates are outstanding oiliness agents and find extensive use in compounding lubricants and textile processing aids.

Flexricin® P-1 Methyl ricinoleate, is a low-temperature plasticizer for rubber polymers in the production of low durometer stock. Lubricant-plasticizer in phenolic molding resins. Plasticizer for epoxy resin systems.

Flexricin® P-3 Butyl ricinoleate, an outstanding plasticizer for polyvinyl butyral, rosin, vinsol resin, and cellulose acetate butyrate resins. A general purpose plasticizer for both nitrocellulose and ethylcellulose.

Flexricin® P-4 Methyl acetyl ricinoleate, an all purpose plasticizer for lacquers and vinyls. A plasticizer and processing aid for low temperature rubber compounds. Flexricin® P-4 has low volatility and imparts cold crack resistance and plate release to flexible nitrocellulose lacquers.

Flexricin® P-6 Butyl acetyl ricinoleate, is a highly efficient plasticizer for nitrocellulose lacquers, imparting good permanence, excellent plate release, cold crack resistance, high gloss and can be used with the polymerized castor oils. Flexricin® P-6 conforms to food packaging FDA regulation 121.2562 for rubber articles.

Flexricin® P-8 Glycerol tri(acetyl ricinoleate) is a very efficient plasticizer having low volatility, excellent electrical properties, extrusion lubricity and heat stability. Used in vinyl wire-jacketing, semi-rigid vinyls and flexible nitrocellulose lacquers.

Flexricin® 9 Propylene glycol mono-ricinoleate, a di-hydroxy ester that is effective as a wetting agent, dye solvent and wax plasticizer. Imparts high dye carrying efficiency and penetration in lipstick formulations. A chemical intermediate.

Flexricin® 13 Glycerol mono-ricinoleate, a di-hydroxy ester that is effective as a wetting agent, dye solvent and wax plasticizer and mold release agent for rubber polymers. A chemical intermediate.

Flexricin® 15 Ethylene glycol mono-ricinoleate, a di-hydroxy ester that is effective as a plasticizer and chemical intermediate. It will impart hydrocarbon resistance to plug valve greases with good low temperature and low viscosity properties.

Paricin® 8 Glycerol Tri(acetoxystearate) is a highly efficient lubricant plasticizer for vinyls, especially high temperature wire jacketing. It has negligible volatility, outstanding electrical properties, extrusion lubricity and is heat and oxidation stable. Paricin(r) 8 is an outstanding pigment grinding medium especially for vinyl resin systems. It is also an excellent high temperature lubricant for metal.

Lubricin® N-1 A highly refined methyl ricinoleate for lubricating oils, motor fuels, upper cylinder lubricants, cutting oils and gear oils. It functions to reduce rusting, corrosion and wear of metal parts and exhibits detergent action on tar, varnish and carbon deposits.
